This instrument is an exceptionally rare, custom-made bugle crafted by Zigmant “Ziggy” Kanstul, whose expertise and innovation in brass instrument design left an enduring legacy, particularly in the drum corps and ceremonial music world

A single valve Bb bugle was specifically commissioned for the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment “Old Guard” Fife and Drum Corps as they celebrated their 50th anniversary (which was in 2010), but your description ("G" with a change valve to "F") indicates a custom military model likely made between the 1980s and 2010s.  They were retired in 2020-2021.

Approximate dimensions are 15x7x11 and weight 18lbs each.

Key features of this instrument include:
  • Authenticity: The provenance is confirmed by Ziggy Kanstul’s son, Jack Kanstul, which greatly adds to its collectible value.

  • Custom Craftsmanship: Ziggy Kanstul was known for producing specialized horns, often tailored for elite groups like the United States Army’s Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Kanstul bugles, especially those created for such ensembles, were known for their superb construction and sound quality.

  • Musical Attributes: The mention of “most likely key G with a change valve to F” aligns with historical innovations attributed to Ziggy Kanstul, who was at the forefront of designing G-F valve and rotor bugles in the late 1960s and beyond. These designs allowed musicians to play in multiple keys with better intonation and flexibility, a breakthrough for marching and ceremonial corps.

  • Unique Markings: The stamp “Kanstul Made in America” signifies its origin from Kanstul Musical Instruments, a company founded by Ziggy in Anaheim, California. Instruments stamped this way are highly regarded by collectors—especially those connected to military or premier ensembles.

  • Collector’s Value: Such custom, authentically stamped instruments—particularly those linked to the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps—are sought after both as musical tools and historical artifacts. Their combination of craftsmanship, innovation, and ceremonial use makes them appealing to brass collectors worldwide.
If you are considering acquiring this instrument, its confirmed provenance, specialized purpose, and the Kanstul legacy make it a genuine piece of American musical and drum corps history.

Includes: A torpedo leather case for a brass instrument, typically sells in the range of $225 to $425 USD for high-quality models made by Torpedo Bags.
